Buddha · 108 encounters
Buddha. 108 encounters is therefore the visual starting point of a series of exhibitions that will deal with the concept of spirituality in the coming years.
The exhibition presents a total of 108 outstanding examples of Buddhist art, mainly sculpture, from India, China, Tibet, Southeast Asia, Korea and Japan. At the center is the likeness of the Gautama Buddha. 108 portraits of the Buddha allow 108 encounters of that face that embodies a man-made ideal of inner and outer peaceableness. The number 108 is considered a sacred number in the Buddhist doctrine, as it represents the 108 volumes of the collected teachings of Gautama Buddha. In the Buddhist temples of Japan, the temple bell is struck 108 times on the last night of the year - each stroke represents one of the 108 earthly temptations that must be left behind on the way to Nirvana.
MARTINCOLOR took over the production of the large-format wallpaper prints shown in the exhibition. These were assembled on-site by the MC assembly team. In addition, a variety of labels were created, which document the exhibition content.
