AI in large format printing – why technology will not replace humans

Created by Michael Hünerbein |

Artificial intelligence is now much more than just a buzzword. While AI is already commonplace in many companies, it is also having an impact on printing and advertising technology. In large-format printing in particular, it opens up new opportunities to optimize processes, reduce errors and improve quality.

In the context of trade fair appearances, exhibition stands and brand presentations, the question often arises:

Will technology replace humans?

The clear answer is no! Good printing is not achieved by algorithms alone, but by people.

AI can analyze, humans decide

AI systems are already demonstrating impressive capabilities in prepress. They detect problems with resolutions, fonts, colors or bleed before production begins.

However, what AI cannot do is make decisions that require creative sensitivity. Is a motif on an exhibition stand still legible from a distance? Does a color look the same under exhibition lighting as it does on the screen? Do graphics on illuminated walls have the desired impact?

This is where experience, creativity and customer consultation remain indispensable.

Colors are more than just values

Intelligent systems can also help with color management. Colors are important for the appearance of brands because they convey emotion, brand identity and perception. This is especially true at trade shows, in retail or in large advertising campaigns. Here, the exchange with the customer between “correctly printed” and “perfectly effective” is crucial.

Human expertise remains decisive, especially for exhibition systems such as mobile exhibition walls, where light, material and colors interact.

Creativity cannot be automated

Even though technology continues to advance, human creativity remains important. AI cannot create brand identity, replace creative intuition or make emotional design decisions. It relieves skilled workers by taking on technical and repetitive tasks. Humans control the design, the idea and the concept.

What does the future hold? A symbiosis

AI is now clearly here to stay. It is increasingly being used as a powerful tool because it offers advantages in terms of quality, efficiency and planning. At the same time, human expertise still has its place.
